With the special ability to take us back to a particular time, place or loved one, smell is one of our most powerful senses. An inspiring scent can elevate our mood and help us to express our personal style. Ancient Egyptians were among the first to discover perfume’s power, and today, it has become a luxurious and often essential step in our daily self-care regimes.
A new season calls for a fresh fragrance, especially summer, as we shed our winter wardrobes and look to sunnier days ahead. Often that shift means retreating into the familiar and spritzing on an old favourite or branching out and experimenting with a fresh new scent.
The Original FURY
Our once beloved FURY fragrance was one of our most popular products at The Sandalwood Shop. Created using grass tree oil (Xanthorrhoea preissii), alongside Australian sandalwood, this fragrance was truly unique. Discontinued due to ingredient sourcing difficulties, we have been on a mission to develop a new fragrance that is inspired by FURY’s unforgettable fragrance, yet produced in a more sustainable and maintainable way.
An iconic part of our native landscape, the grass tree is recognisable for its stout trunk, dramatic fanning leaves and small white-to-yellow flower spikes. Notoriously slow growing, the grass tree can take up to 30 years to reach its full size, and it can live for hundreds of years, making its elderly specimens amongst the oldest living plants in the world. Magically resistant to flames, the grass tree is also known as the fire tree for its thermal insulation, a unique physiological adaptation that protects it from wildfire. A few months after a fire passes, it re-sprouts and experiences prolific flowering that provides food for insects and birds.
Grass Tree’s precious pure amber-coloured oil, with its warm, resinous and floral undertones, is extracted from a hollow ring of accumulated leaf bases at the trunk. The solvent extraction method was traditionally used to isolate the oil from the tree's resin, but its low yields of oil made it an expensive and unsustainable approach.
Growing at about an inch (2½ cm) per year, unregulated harvesting for landscaping, floristry and nurseries has seen the grass tree under threat. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, and we have been working on a more planet-friendly process to produce something similar to this unique oil. The solution was found in a synthetic replication inspired by the grass tree. Using FURY'S original perfume compositions, we have worked closely with a French perfumer on Sanphyre FURY to create an inclusive, gender-neutral scent we know you will love as much as the original (if not more)!
FURY Reborn – Sustainably!
With the launch of Sanphyre FURY, our sustainable adaption carries the essence of the original FURY so you can experience the comfort of an old friend, with the excitement of a new twist. Sanphyre FURY is a modern blend of white florals, amber, and sandalwood's (Santalum spicatum) deep, creamy sweetness grown and nurtured in the central Western Australia. Most significantly, Sanphyre FURY, like the original, revolves around grass tree but without the need to extract from the plant itself. Our new approach has produced a perfume that is not only sophisticated but smells incredible, too.
Sanphyre FURY is available in two special editions:
Sanphyre FURY Gold
Composed of woody notes with a fragrant floral and citrus base that is soft and beautifully simple. Its top note of bergamot chimes with heart notes of fire tree, jasmine, orange blossom, violet, and plum and a woody base of amber, cashmere wood and sandalwood.
Sanphyre FURY Black
Features top notes of bergamot, lavender, clary sage, pink pepper, ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom. Its heart of fire tree, white flowers, geranium, and plum combine with an ambery long-lasting sandalwood base that ensures its scent doesn't fade or shift throughout the day.
