Sandalwood Nut Oil

Date Posted:27 December 2023

We continually look at the therapeutic properties and benefits of Sandalwood Essential Oil, which is the oil extracted from the wood of the Sandalwood tree, but did you know that the Australian Sandalwood Tree (Santalum spicatum) produces an edible Sandalwood Nut or Seed.  The oil contained in this nut is a true skin elixir.

How the Oil is Extracted from the Sandalwood Nut

Sandalwood trees fruit in late winter and develop to a drupe in summer, in the peak of summer these fruits fall to the ground, leaving a dried fruit as a husk and a seed which consist of an oil rich kernel protected with a hard shell.

Farmers collect the fallen fruits when they are naturally dry and remove the husks, seeds, or the nuts with their hardshell can remain stable if stored in dry conditions for over 10 years.

The first step of the process is to remove the shells to separate kernels by passing through a de-shelling machine, a mechanical mill which is commonly used in other nut industries.

Kernels are then rolled to form flat flake like material using roller mills, this process exposes the interior oil bodies of the kernel without damaging the structure. Milled sandalwood nut kernel are stored under vacuum refrigeration or subjected to extraction immediately.

Sandalwood nut kernel material is fed to an extractor and extracted with safe solvents approved for food and pharmaceutical use. Once the required amount is extracted, the solvent is removed and stored for reuse in future extractions.

The extract obtained is a clear golden colour oil, which is known as sandalwood nut oil. This product needs to be stored in airtight containers and kept away from direct sunlight and heat.

Why Sandalwood Nut Oil is a great ingredient in Skin Care

Sandalwood nut kernels have over 50% lipids, among them ximenynic acid is a unique fatty acid found only in few plant species, including sandalwood. This rare fatty acid is chemically an acetylenic in nature, which means having a triple bond between two carbon atoms in its long carbon chain.

This unique chemistry gives a unique bioactivity for ximenynic acid, it shows to inhibit inflammation and increase the blood flow in capillaries, these activities are beneficial in cosmetics and hair care products to soothe the skin as well as increase nutrition to the skin and hair follicle, resulting increase hair growth and reducing the signs of aging.

I've been buying the 2BYoung Duo since I came across the Facial Moisturiser & Body Balm in Broome in 2010. They feel good on my skin & smell divine. The SPF 15 is also a bonus. I wouldn't use anything else.
