Frankincense Oil

Date Posted:12 February 2024

If you have an interest in essential oils, chances are you have used frankincense.

A versatile oil, frankincense is used for its medicinal and aromatic properties, while also having a long history in religious and spiritual rituals. A symbol of deity, frankincense is known to be one of the gifts the Magi (wise men) brough to Jesus.

Frankincense has a complex aroma often described as earthy, warm, spicy, or balsamic while also being slightly sweet and citrusy.

Derived from the resin of the Boswellia tree, which is native to the Arabian Peninsula, Africa, and India. The resin is obtained by making small incisions in the bark of the tree, allowing the sap to ooze out and harden into a gum-like substance. This process is referred to as “tapping” or “milking” the tree. The resin is cut from the trees and burned as incense or made into essential oil, through steam-distillation.

The process of extracting frankincense can be labour-intensive, and the resin collected has been a traditional livelihood for communities in regions where these trees grow. Sustainable harvesting practices are crucial to ensure the long-term health of the Boswellia trees and to support the communities that depend on frankincense production.

Benefits and Uses of Frankincense

Aromatherapy – Frankincense is believed to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and create a calm and focused atmosphere. It is often used to achieve spiritual grounding and in meditative practices.

Method - Try diffusing a few drops of our Frankincense and Sandalwood Album Oil to promote peace and relaxation.

Skin Care – Frankincense is included in some skincare products due to its potential benefits to the skin. When applied topically, frankincense oil is thought to have anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. It may be used to support skin health, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and soothe irritation.

Method - Dilute a couple of drops of frankincense oil with a carrier, such as jojoba or coconut oil, before applying to the skin.

Respiratory Health – Inhalation of frankincense oil vapour may help alleviate respiratory issues and promote clear breathing. Research suggests that the compounds in frankincense prevent the production of leukotrienes, which cause the inflammation and the constriction of bronchial muscles in asthma.

Method – Inhale the vapour, either directly from the bottle or by adding a couple of drops to hot water.

Stress and Anxiety – The aroma of frankincense is thought to have calming effects and may be used to reduce stress and anxiety. Massaging with frankincense oil may help relax muscles, reduce tension, and contribute to an overall sense of well-being. The aromatic experience during massage can enhance relaxation.

Method – Combine a couple of drops of frankincense oil with a carrier oil and use it for massage.

Spiritual and Meditation Practices – The use of frankincense oil in religious and spiritual practices has a long history. The aroma is associated with purification, grounding, and spiritual connection.

Method – Burn frankincense resin or diffuse the oil during meditation or spiritual rituals. A sandalwood and frankincense blend are often used in these practices.

Frankincense and Sandalwood

The complementary aromas and potential synergistic effects of sandalwood and frankincense offers a versatile and effective blend that can be used for a wide range of purposes, from promoting relaxation and emotional well-being to enhancing spiritual practices and skincare routines.

Sandalwood has a rich, creamy, woody aroma, while frankincense has a warm, resinous, and slightly spicy scent. When blended, these aromas create a balanced and harmonious mix that is both grounding and uplifting. They create a potent blend for emotional support and stress relief.

Both sandalwood and frankincense have base notes that linger on the skin or in the air for an extended period. Blending these oils can result in a fragrance that is not only pleasant but also long-lasting, making it suitable for perfumery and scenting personal care products.
